Since 1987, this festival for contemporary expanded media has sought to promote film and media culture. Wand 5, the German Association has organized the Stuttgart Filmwinter and now, with over 10,000 visitors and 1,500 submissions, Stuttgart is one of Europe 's most important platforms for film and media art. This year the festival's theme, Mondo Cannibale, focuses on global deformations and Snuff-Capitalism and, for the first time, new media will be spilt into such categories as software, net art, and virtual communities. Another first this year: theory works may be submitted in order to encourage dialog between artists and scientists.
