In his first solo show Justin Coombes, presents a new series of photographic works. Subtly undermining the viewers’ expectations of straight photography Coombes creates tableaux created by projecting images onto buildings and into interiors, brining the literary and historical aspects of image making to the fore. In ‘Urban Pastoral’ Coombes looks at contemporary London from an outsider’s perspective. Rooftop views, council estates, back gardens cluttered with washing lines, bicycles and toys are brought alive by the projections, which hint at another world hidden within these mundane places that play host to a series of isolated figures, some in harmony and at ease with their environments, other obviously trying to escape them; they are trapped between the projected space of their imaginings and the real environments in which they find themselves.
